Qualities of Our Leaders

Baha’is are not political, and are asked not to engage in partisan politics. We carry the message of God to our time in history- something infinitely more sacred and sublime than any political discussion. But we are engaged and care deeply about our world and our societies. The statement above is taken from a Tablet Baha’u’llah revealed to Queen Victoria, who had established parliamentary rule in one of the first democratic forms of government. He is advising those elected leaders about how they should regard themselves.

As we approach the US election, it is valuable to meditate on the qualities Baha’u’llah advised us to seek in our leaders.  This striking statement- that elected leaders in all nations should “regard themselves as the representatives of all who dwell on earth” is a striking departure from how they often think about their role, but is consistent with the “world-embracing vision” Baha’u’llah asks us to have.

A Talk in Paris

Modern Perspectives series is now publishing short talks and readings.  In this wonderful short video, Masud Olufani reads from a talk of ‘Abdu’l-Baha’ in Paris in 1912.  Every bit of it is worth listening to, as it highlights fundamental truths that are like a breath of fresh air to our world right now.  Click here to listen to the reading.

What is the purpose of religion?

When we view the great religions of humanity from the perspective given to us in the Baha’i Faith, they take on a new meaning and we can appreciate them more fully.  We can then understand that religion is not what it is often portrayed to be- by its detractors and even its adherents.  Religion is intended to be for unity, is consistent with reality, and has a transcendent and sublime purpose that all humanity can reap benefits from.

Let’s discuss it at the “Tea House” on Thursday at 7pm. Learn more here.

If you are looking for previous Tea House discussions, they will be published shortly. We are having some small technical difficulties that have not yet been overcome. But the “oneness of religion’ discussions are coming soon!

The Oneness of Religion

What if all the great religions of humanity were true?  What if, instead of being thought of as different religions with conflicting claims, they were actually considered part of the unfoldment of one religion?  When you look at the religions of humanity, they each claimed to be the fulfillment of the religions that existed before them and expressions of a single truth, so why have we divided them up into separate communities? The teaching that all the great religions are really all different chapters in the same book is a fundamental principle revealed by Baha’u’llah, the founder of the Baha’i Faith, who himself claimed to be the bearer of a new revelation that fulfilled the great religions of the past.

In Sifter Of Dust’s next zoom-based “Tea House” discussion on Thursday evening at 7pm, we will explore this idea in more depth. Everyone is welcome!  Bring your questions and your thoughts- and let’s talk about it!
