The Tea House

Sifter of Dust is starting a podcast for the general public!

Starting Oct 1st. It’s called “The Tea House” and will be a recorded zoom discussion on the Baha’i teachings which you can join live Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm EST.  You don’t need to know much of anything about the Baha’i Faith to join the discussion.  Every discussion will have a short presentation with structured discussion followed by a more general dialogue where everyone can make points and ask questions. Follow the updates on our posts and the new Tea House page for information and upcoming topics.  You can then download the podcast via iTunes, Spotify and other podcast outlets when it is published shortly after.

“The Tea House” is a reference to a period when Baha’u’llah freely moved among the people of the city of Baghdad, visiting the coffee shops and tea houses while engaging in spirited conversation.  A lovely video has been made describing this and may be found here.

Wafted

At this time in the northern hemisphere, all the flowers and plants are dispersing their seeds into the wind, preparing for a winter followed by a spring in which those seeds will germinate and populate the ground with new and luscious plants.

In this short passage, taken from a Tablet of Baha’u’llah advising us how to act and be in the world, he emphasizes the qualities of “forbearance” and “justice”- that we treat others with fairness and justice, while at the same time always being tolerant of our differences and distinctions. To be forbearing also means to be patient, long-suffering, and not act out of haste or emotion.

Justice, fairness, tolerance, and patience are all synonyms for the qualities expressed in this passage, and are the “sweet savors of holiness”. These qualities then “waft” from us, like seeds in the wind, and then sprinkle the hearts of other peoples.

Sifter of Dust is committed to highlighting the astonishing beauty and depth of the words of Baha’u’llah and the Baha’i Faith, as a guide for us to transform our world into one of peace and solidarity among all peoples.

The Promised Day Is Come

One of the prominent features of Baha’u’llah’s Revelation is His emphasis that the time we are living in is of an unprecedented character. Never before has humanity had so much capacity and the world has potential in a way that it never had before.  It has also been given a new and marvelous Revelation to help it advance to the next stage of our spiritual and social development. All the prophecies in the Bible and Quran are now fulfilled in the time in which we live. The Promised Day is Come.

On Saturday, Sept 12th, for the Modern Perspectives series, Farzam Kamalabadi will give a presentation on this topic, reflecting on these themes.  Join it live here.

Science and Religion

As part of the “Modern Perspectives” series, Dr Steven Phelps gave a personal introduction to the Baha’i concept of science and religion from a Baha’i perspective. In this presentation, he covers many of the basic concepts in how science and religion are viewed as in agreement. The foundation of the Baha’i approach is that both describe reality, and the investigation of reality is at the heart of both science and faith. With a Phd in physics and a degree in philosophy, as well as a deep knowledge of the Baha’i Writings in their original languages, Dr Phelps brings a unique perspective that is very stimulating to hear.  You can find his presentation here. It is also housed on the Sifter of Dust “Modern Perspectives” page here. The accompanying quotes for the presentation are here. Enjoy!
